Matt Tolfrey, DJ, producer and Leftroom Records founder, dies

DJ, producer, and Leftroom Records founder Matt Tolfrey has passed away.
The news was confirmed earlier today by Damian Lazarus via an Instagram post.

“Matt Tolfrey played a vital role in our music community, and his absence will be deeply felt,” Lazarus wrote. “Matt believed in unity and in bringing people together, both on and off the dance floor. Through his label Leftroom Records, he created a platform that connected like-minded artists and fostered creativity.”

No cause of death has been announced at this time.

Born in England and raised in Bahrain, Matt returned to the UK at the age of 16, settling in the Midlands. His first DJ gig took place in a bar in Worcester, before he enrolled at Nottingham Trent University, where he became fully immersed in the local electronic music scene. He hosted the Junk Funk radio show on Fly FM and earned residencies at two of Nottingham’s most respected clubs: The Bomb and Stealth.

After releasing his first track on Damian Lazarus’s Crosstown Rebels, Tolfrey launched his own imprint, Leftroom Records — born from his desire to produce and release off-center, experimental house and techno. The label’s early success led him to host nights at T Bar in Shoreditch, housed in the Tea Building, one of the epicenters of the mid-2000s minimal techno movement.

In 2007, he curated the Don’t Be Leftout compilation, named after his club night, and over the years collaborated with artists such as D. Ramirez, Lee Curtiss, Kate Simko, and Geddes. In 2012, he released The Truth with house pioneer Marshall Jefferson, a standout track from his debut album Word Of Mouth.

In 2015, Matt celebrated a decade of his label with Ten Years Of Leftroom, and soon after, London’s iconic fabric invited him to contribute to their renowned mix series. The resulting Fabric 81 featured tracks by Dan Beaumont, Nail, Jozif, Phil Weeks, Cassy, Kevin Yost, and more.

Throughout his career, he performed at some of the world’s most iconic venues and festivals, including Panorama Bar (Berlin), Burning Man, Space Miami, and DC-10 in Ibiza. His productions have appeared on labels such as Elrow Music, Kaluki, Hot Creations, Nite Grooves, and Riva Starr’s Snatch!

In recent years, following the pandemic, Tolfrey focused primarily on his agency One 800 Management, representing artists including Archie Hamilton, Jansons, Jordan Peake, Guti, Jesse Calosso, Fleur Shore, and Mason Collective. He also worked in A&R for The Martinez Brothers’ label, Cuttin’ Headz.

Matt is survived by his former partner Hayley and their two daughters, Aria and Beau.
