New documentary celebrates Chicago house music's 40th anniversary

A new documentary celebrating 40 years of Chicago’s iconic house music scene, House Music: A Cultural Revolution, premieres tonight, November 8.

This film explores the genre’s journey, featuring rare archival footage from the early days and interviews with the pioneers who shaped house music’s story. It highlights the vital role of Chicago’s Black and LGBTQ+ club scenes, which gave house music the space to evolve. Additionally, it examines how house music’s unique sound has inspired modern pop artists, including global superstars like Beyoncé.

In an interview with Chicago Tonight, producer Barbara Allen shared insights on the genre’s powerful community spirit: “The film talks a lot about the community… the congregation of people that make house music. Once you get the beat, it becomes almost chanting with your body – where you all get in the same groove as you would in a chant but you do it with your body and you’re dancing.”

House Music: A Cultural Revolution debuts on Chicago’s WTTW channel at 8 PM CST as part of the ‘Chicago Stories’ documentary series.
